Today, a split (4–4) U.S. Supreme Court upheld a decision by the Oklahoma Supreme Court blocking the creation of the nation’s first religious public charter school. In doing so, the Court addressed a question that has loomed over public education for nearly two years: Will religious public charter schools be allowed? For now, the answer is no — and we believe that’s a good outcome.

By allowing the lower court's ruling to stand, the Supreme Court preserves the fundamental nature of charter schools: public institutions free and open to all students without religious affiliation.

While this decision is significant from a constitutional perspective — affirming the distinction between public and private education — we also believe every student should have access to high-quality educational options, including faith-based schools. That is why we support and finance affordable and high-quality facilities where students can learn and thrive, regardless of school type.

We remain committed to strengthening communities by investing in educational spaces that serve as neighborhood anchors. Our mission continues to focus on creating inclusive, accessible environments that meet the diverse needs of all students – charters and beyond.
